There are plenty of opportunities to volunteer on chantiers (worksites) throughout Ile-de-France. They usually require a minimum commitment of 14 days (but there are a few weekend camps), and cost from Euro 12/day for food and board in camping facilities. Most volunteers are young (but it’s not a requirement), and come from all over the world. This isn’t a luxury gig, but volunteers get to help restore a piece of French heritage. The web site is partly bilingual, but the chantier listings are all in French. If you don’t understand, it’s best to call and talk to them directly.
